I despair at so much modern music. It’s all skinny white boys pretending to be The Strokes, regurgitating the same old three-chord repetition. Or The Strokes.
Thanks God then for artists like Shabaka Hutchings. His latest project sees him work again with The Ancestors, a collection of virtuoso South African jazz musicians.
Right now, Hutchings is one of our finest musical talents. His music, whether with the Ancestors, The Comet is Coming or Sons of Kemet, will challenge you. It’s not easy listening. But it’s worth the investment (aurally and financially).
Shabaka and the Ancestors’ new album, We Are Sent Here By History is out now. I reviewed it for Louder Than War and invite you, most cordially, to have a read.
