JOHN GRANT: BOY FROM MICHIGAN

The consistently brilliant Boy From Michigan is back again…and this time it’s personal. Actually, when it comes to JG, it invariably is, although it’s probably fair to say that Boy From Michigan is even more personal than his previous workouts.

Two things you can always rely on from Grant: the voice and that outstanding songwriting capability. Both are here in spades. Just So You Know is arguably the finest vocal performance of his entire career, whilst the album’s first three songs – the Michigan trilogy – are as strong an album opening as you will encounter in 2021.

Of course, it’s not groundbreaking. It’s not a radical departure on the trademark John Grant stuff. But that doesn’t matter. It’s damn fine just as it is. More than that, in fact, it’s quite magnificent.
